CALIAS

It was only one week of Vanessa refusing to leave her private quarters, but to Nesria and I, it had felt like nothing shorter than an eternity.

My mind had been riddled with worry, and at times I had grown sick with concern. It’s not right to have someone under your care rotting away in their bed for days on end, barely mustering more than a mouthful of food at mealtime.

She had even grown disinterested in reading together, one of the very things we bonded over when she first arrived.

I dealt with feelings of failure, but that all changed when she showed up in the dining room, her radiant beauty as flourishing as ever. My troubles left me in an instant.

After our meal, we ventured out to town for a shopping spree. Now, we’re returning to the mansion with bags upon bags of clothing and jewelry befitting for a woman like Vanessa.

“Did you enjoy your day?” I ask, stroking her hair behind her ear.

“Yeah, it was… lovely.”

“I’m glad to hear,” I reply, sighing with contentment. “So, what would you like to do when we get back inside?”

“I… I think I would like a bit of alone time if that’s okay.”

“Of course it is. I haven’t forgotten how important that is to you,” I say, ending with a laugh.

She smiles and looks out the window as we draw closer to my home. Soon, I’m carrying all of her bags inside as she gets a head start.

I step into the entrance to see Nesria talking to Vanessa with her hand resting on my girl’s shoulder. Before I say anything, Vanessa hurries off upstairs. Nesria turns to me with a blank expression and comes to offer me a hand.

“Have these stowed away, would you? Make me some tea after you’re done, I’ll be relaxing in the lounge.”

I could finally go about my day and not worry about Vanessa. Taking a break from my work no longer feels like a crime.

Not a single worry comes over my mind as I melt into the couch, a book of demonic fairy tales in hand. It is the same one I first gifted to Vanessa upon her arrival, and I am intrigued to take a trip down memory lane.

I cannot help but feel proud of myself, wondering if what cured her depression was simply remembering all of the luxuries she has at her disposal here.

Nesria enters the lounge with a fresh cup of tea, placing it down on the table in front of me.

“You seem quite happy,” she remarks. “The happiest you’ve been in a week.”

“That’s because I am,” I reply. “Vanessa has fully recovered from her troubles and I couldn’t be any more elated.”

My smile drops as she shakes her head.

“What is it?” I ask.

“Oh Calias,” she says, taking a seat beside me. “You were always a smart boy growing up, and you are no doubt an intelligent man, but sometimes it seems like you have no clue what’s going on with those around you.”

“What are you talking about, Nesria? She told me herself that she was over her depression.
